Zines first appeared in the science fiction fandom communities of the 1930s. The name "zine" comes from their name for "fanzine," which is short for "fan magazine." They were often handmade in small batches.

Fast forward to the 1950s and 60s. Zines began to grow in popularity with members of the counterculture movements of that time. Zine-making allowed individuals or groups to spread their ideas and inspire others by self-publishing and avoiding the usual restrictions (and censoring) that came with more traditional publishing methods. 

Zines continued to be popular throughout the 70s when there was a shift towards using the zine as an art form that allowed for more playful iterations.

In the 80s the punk music community notably expanded upon the format to create a wide array of content. It was at this point that zines became aligned with the ideas of cultural revolt. Or in other words, a way to share content that may not align with societal norms and practice self-expression.

Our seasonal zines were born from this same spirit of breaking away from the norms of day-to-day life to inspire our readers and #naturelovers to embrace seasonal living.

In each issue, you'll find seasonally-themed content and tips to support you throughout each season.

Past zines have included seasonally themed tarot spreads, blessing rituals, and recipes. For example, in Issue #1, you'll find a tasty recipe for Herbal Simple Syrup. Rock Hounds will be excited to see that each issue contains the crystals for the season. We are excited to use this format to connect with you, our community, whether you stop by the shop or prefer to fill your cart online.

In each edition, you'll also learn about the latest happenings at Almanac Supply Co., including new endeavors, our makers and their products, and how we're enjoying nature right here in Chattanooga, TN. Much like the Old Farmer's Almanac, we hope our zine can be your trusty guide for a variety of seasonal rituals and routines.
